Listening to the workers’ voice: Reimagining workers’ compensation claims systems in Australia

Historically, Australian workers have not been directly involved in the design or operation of compensation systems, rejecting their experiences, views and preferences. Research findings have consistently shown that the current system can inflict additional trauma, particularly for people with complex conditions or mental health claims. This 3-year ARC funded Workers’ Voice study aims to reimagine a different future for workers’ compensation, by co-designing a new approach with injured workers’ and their support people to ‘Challenge What’s Possible’. Through multiple methods of data collection, surveys, personal stories submissions and interviews; a computer model of the current system will be created. In co-design workshops researchers and injured workers will develop a computer model of a new proposed system.

An overview of the study methods and initial findings will be presented, including early results from the large national survey and themes emerging from interviews with workers.
