Clearing the air: Practical skills for tobacco cessation and research on e-cigarettes
This presentation will be delivered by members of Cancer Council NSW’s Tobacco Control Unit. Our team aims to reduce the burden caused by tobacco use through programs, research and advocacy in tobacco cessation, smoke-free environments, tobacco retail policies and e-cigarette use. Attendees will gain efficient, practical skills to assist their clients to quit smoking. The learning objectives for this presentation are: 1. Understand the prevalence of smoking and e-cigarette use in Australia. 2. Understand the role allied health professionals can play in tobacco cessation. 3. Learn how to apply the Ask, Advise, Help model of brief advice in tobacco cessation. 4. Increase understanding of e-cigarettes, associated harms and their effectiveness for quitting smoking.
About the Presenters
The Tobacco Control Unit is a team of dedicated public health professionals from Cancer Council NSW. They aim to reduce the impact of tobacco use through evidence-based research, policy and programs. Through their innovative and impactful work, the Tobacco Control Unit works to be an expert and resourceful voice in keeping tobacco control as a key priority. They do this by:
• Delivering the Tackling Tobacco program within the community service sector to reduce smoking prevalence amongst priority populations in NSW.
• Managing large tobacco control research projects, such as e-cigarette use by young people and associated risks.
• Providing information, advice and resources about the dangers of tobacco use and e-cigarettes to the NSW community.
• Making submissions to Government and consistently advocating for stronger tobacco control policies and regulations.
The Tobacco Control Unit plays a critical role in reducing the burden of tobacco-related diseases in NSW and reduce cancer risk.
